Why My ADHD Brain Belongs in Cornwall!!

My names ADHD Girl and I’m addicted to Cornwall! For those who’ve never heard of it; it’s a really rural beautiful place in the Southwest of England (if you think of that leg at the bottom left-hand side of the UK, most of that is Cornwall!). For those who have heard of it but have never been, you are missing out big time!!

So, what am I doing talking about Cornwall on my ADHD blog? Well, no I’m not doing some paid advertising, but that’s where I was on holiday last week with my family. We stayed in this amazing lodge right in the heart of Cornwall that had a BBQ, a wood log burner, a bedroom each (not for the kids, they had to share- sorry guys!) and best of all a hot tub. Before you ask, yes it did cost quite a bit, but it was worth every penny!

“Memory association can be stronger in ADHD brains because of sensory processsing overwhelm. It doesn’t mean our memory is better, it means we make more connections from the environment around us.”

Yet, it wasn’t the lodge that’s what I love most about Cornwall, as soon as we crossed over the border because to quote Elphaba from Wicked ‘something has changed within me, something is not the same’. There is just something about the Cornish air, the beautiful rural places and the vibe of the people that instantly makes me relax.

Now if you also have ADHD you’ll notice that I don’t use that word ‘relax’ lightly, but what I have said in some of my best blogs is sometimes a change of environment can have a big impact on the ADHD brain, the right conditions can force it to be more productive or have the opposite effect.

For me Cornwall with its nice weather, gorgeous rural costal walks and cute seaside port villages (big shout out to Port Isaac, my favourite place in the entire world) reminds my brain of the simpler things in life. Like the fact it’s pretty cool I live on an island, that life doesn’t always have to be running round after the next goal, and also the Fisherman’s Friends songs are actually really catchy (any ADHD brain should 100% listen to sea shanties to get them moving!). I also read a study that people in coastal areas tend to live longer because of negative ions that helps our blood to absorb more oxygen which helps balance out melatonin levels (something which ADHDers lack!!).

“No other place in the world has made me feel the way that Cornwall does because it has a completely different vibe.”

So, there you have it ADHDers, we should all just move to the amazing place that is Cornwall. However, with 2.6 million of us across the UK having ADHD, I don’t think the Cornish folk would be happy, all 572,000 of them last time there was a count. You see there is a reason Cornwall has such a beautiful and rural relaxing vibe, it’s because a lot of it’s fairly empty (apart from the flock of summer tourists of course).

See you next week ADHDers where I’ll be blogging about why ADHD and consequences for males with ADHD must go hand in hand.
