Hobbies that Benefit

You know those moments in life where you look around and think this is….this is what it was all for…this is where it was all leading? Sadly for many of us with ADHD we really struggle to feel a sense of achievement. We’re either setting ourselves unrealistic goals then beating ourselves up for not achieving them or we’re not even trying at all. That’s why I spoke last week about us all trying to focus on our strengths instead of being frustrated with our weaknesses.

In my spare time I’ve always found myself attracted to hobbies that make me feel like I’m being productive. Hilarious isn’t it? When you consider that ADHD is supposed to mean the opposite.  My main hobby is creative writing which is great as it has helped me to become a self-published author and to a certain extend helps me to do this blog. My other hobbies include volunteering, campaigning for social justice and I’ve recently discovered an old one that I love to do but have had very little time for.

“Everyone deserves something that helps them to shine and they enjoy doing. The key is to find it!!”

Confession time: I enjoy cross stitching! That’s right, I enjoy using a needle and thread to create pretty pictures. Now because of my hand eye coordination (dyspraxia) this can lead to some frustration; threading the needle, trying to figure out the pattern etc. But apart from that I actually find it quite therapeutic. It’s repetitive so I feel it helps me mentally recharge, plus I get something nice out of it too.

I’m a big believer in individualism; I think everyone should have hobbies and interests that make them feel good about themselves as a person, but also perhaps help others too if they can. Life is hard, especially as an ADHD and the more things we do that feel good the better. It can make the things that don’t’ feel good, such as doing the dishes etc bearable.

I’d love to know if any of you have any unique hobbies that benefit your ADHD, ones that rather than make you feel bad about your ADHD, actually helps it to be better.
