Hey ADHDers and Allies! A happy new year to you all! I hope you had a great holiday season. Personally, I found Christmas day to be very overwhelming and much more enjoyed the downtime afterwards. Alas back to reality now and I’m still adjusting.
I’ve been getting better acquainted with Alexa over the last few months to try and aid symptoms of my ADHD. This was after my lovely podcast guest Shane Thrapp pointed out that ‘we ADHDers constantly need external organisation techniques and Alexa can help with these (the guest featured in the three ADHD and Relationships Episodes and had some great insights- listen here.)
So, every Tuesday Alexa tells me to change the beds over and as much as I hate it, I know I have to do it because I’m the one who set myself that goal. I also have her tell me on Thursday to wash all the towels. It’s just stuff that doesn’t have to take up space in my head because as many with ADHD know, mental energy can high or low but never really balanced.
“Alexa even boils my new smart kettle for me! Which will I admit isn’t really a lot to do with ADHD and makes me somewhat lazy, I love having it boiled by the time I reach the kitchen!”
ADHD gIRL
I realise of course that not every ADHDer has an Alexa or the money for one (though I did a great combo sale with mine when buying a ring doorbell also). My point is that life is hard when you have ADHD because your brain is constantly forgetting things, remembering and overthinking on things it shouldn’t and then there is the whole emotional regulation thing. The more we can make life easier by using these external memory storage devices the better. Whether that means setting reminders on your phone, using visual aids or even body doubling.
Having ADHD can sometimes suck! There is no denying that, but by putting things in place to help ourselves without over relying on others (I’ve found this to cause issues in the past) we can help to ease some of the burden and overall be more productive.
Take care ADHDers and Allies. The next blog article all about the rising use of the term ‘neurospicy’ will be out two weeks today!
