The Simple Life

Raising awareness of all things ADHD! - ADHD pexels thought catalog 317580 904616

This is going to sound strange considering I have ADHD and my brain needs stimulation, but sometimes I just miss the good old days of the 90s where there wasn’t as much technology around, especially if I’ve been doing a rewatch of the TV show Friends.

At this time of year, with the weather being bad and the evenings getting darker early I subscribe to all the streaming services and watch more tv shows/ movies, so this probably sounds hypocritical. However, I think social connections now in some cases are poorer due to technology.

It’s so strange to think that back in the 90s we couldn’t google things at the drop of the hat, couldn’t let people we had got somewhere until we arrived and couldn’t talk to someone/ message someone as soon as we wanted to. Of course, we live in a completely different time where there is more danger so maybe all those things are warranted, but I think sometimes it can lead to overstimulation as well.

“ADHD is a balance of extremes and unfortunately advanced technology can lead to a lot of overstimulation even when we’re not aware of it.”

The other day I read a book while my SAD lamp was on and I had a cup of peppermint tea and I felt so content. Society encourages us to live life on the edge, full pelt and have no regrets, but sometimes it’s the simple things in life that can benefit us the most. Maybe it’s just me, maybe I need to be more disciplined in terms of switching off my tech, but then you feel at a disconnect

I keep mentioning that word balance with ADHD but I’m not sure we can ever have it or least have it without working ourselves silly because we are all or nothing. If we’re all, all the time it can lead to burnout and overwhelm (welcome to my world). Whereas if we’re denying ourselves things then it can lead to demotivation and lack of stimulation.

Either way, we can’t move back, only forward and as much as I wish for the simple life of the 80s/ 90s, I need to focus on the here and now. The Danish have a word called Hygge which basically means ‘to live in the moment’ and that’s what I think I need to do more of over the next few weeks and months, especially with my SAD in full swing.

Take care ADHDers and Allies, next week I’ll be blogging about goal setting when you have ADHD and why it can be the key to either our success or failure.
