An Update from My ADHD Life…

This Saturday I will be 37, which means I’ve been knowing living with ADHD for twenty-seven years and what a journey it’s been! If you’d have asked little ten-year-old me or even 15-year-old me that I would be running an educational website on what it is to live with ADHD that included a blog and a podcast I’d have said you were mad.

For my birthday we’re doing a little mini break to somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit (more about that at a later date) and doing a nice evening meal. The older I get the more I appreciate the less material blessings of my birthday. Of course, I’m always grateful if people want to buy me a present but, in a world, where so many awful things are happening to a lot of people, I guess I just feel lucky to be alive, in relatively good health and spending my birthday with the people I love.

I’ve noticed as I get older certain aspects of my ADHD are getting more difficult to manage, for example it’s rare I’m able to sit through a full movie now without getting distracted (I know that’s probably a lot of people know with how busy society gets), which reminds me I took the kids to watch the live action version of How to Train your Dragon in the cinema the other day and it was absolutely epic, would highly recommend as I didn’t look at my phone once.

I also watched The Salt Path recently, while it wasn’t on the cinematic scale of How to Train your Dragon, it was still a great feel-good watch with an inspiring story. It also showed a lot of the beauty of Cornwall, which for those of you who read my blog regularly will know, is a very special place for me.

The day before Father’s Day I spent with my dad watching Only Fools and Horses the Musical, which we really enjoyed. Anyone who is a fan of the old sitcom will, though strictly speaking I’m not sure the concept really works as a musical, but still a lot of feel-good fun.

I’ve been very busy of late, but with ADHD that can be a mixed bag! There is never any balance.”

Gosh reading all of the above, you’d think I have a fantastic social life, but this is just a little snapshot of a busy period. Come winter I’ll be locking the front door and won’t be stepping foot outside too. Fortunately, the weather has been fairly nice lately so I’m hoping we’ll be up to lots this summer too.

I’ve often found keeping my ADHD brain busy physically or mentally is a good way to ensure that I get a good night sleep and feel at my best, of course I’ve got to balance that with emotional regulation and ensuring I don’t get burnout so it’s never just plain sailing.

Catch you in two weeks ADHDers and allies where I’ll be blogging about whether food consumed has an impact on ADHD, which is linked to this month’s podcast episode (released on Friday).
