So, after listening to this month’s podcast released last week (available here), you might have heard that a little while ago I sought the help of a healthy lifestyle coach through my doctors. I’ve always been able to lose weight, but I think this year was the first time I realised that I have become what is known a yo-yo dieter and I hate it. It’s made me think what’s the point in losing it, if I’m just going to put it back on. I needed something that was sustainable long term.
The first visit went ok but I don’t think I was quite ready to commit because I was at the beginning of the kid’s summer holidays, change of routine, stress you know how it goes, but for my second visit I got serious. She took my weight and let me tell you, nothing is more of a rude awakening that allowing yourself to be weighed knowing you’re overweight.
“All year I’ve been reluctant to lose weight because I always end up putting it on again, so what’s the point?”
ADHD Girl
The healthy lifestyle coach explained that I should eat a high amount of protein but not cut out fat or carbs. Not cut out carbs I explained but I’m ADHD, I’m all or nothing. I always cut out carbs when losing weight. Then she explained to me that in cutting carbs I was doing my body a disservice because carbs are needed for energy. I was sceptical but I thought I’ll give this a go because if I don’t have to cut carbs it won’t affect my SAD and well maybe it won’t be as bad.
Well fast forward to 25 days later to my next healthy lifestyle coach appointment and I have lost 7lbs!! Wow, in that time I’ve had pizza (a special protein one), chocolate, crisps and I’ve had to cut out nothing (obviously I’ve been I on a calorie deficit with high protein). I feel filled with renewed optimism because if I can keep this up, it may well work well in the long term.
“I’ll be honest I was very sceptical that I’d be able to lose weight without cutting anything out, but I’ve never been more glad to be wrong.”
So, there you have it ADHDers and allies, it’s not impossible to lose weight while still having your favourite foods. I’ll probably keep you updated every now and again, but I do have a long way to go because if I’m being honest my aim would be to lose at least another 76 pounds which equates to a huge 5 stone 5 pounds (I mean I’m technically clinically obese, I just seem to be very good at hiding it.) Still, it’s exciting to see where I’ll be in a years’ time because it’s very plausible that I might be at my goal. All I can say is watch this space.
Catch you next week ADHDers and Allies, where I’ll be updating you on our Belfast adventures.
